Monday 19th of June 2007 During
the excavations at Rue de Capelle, Komen, ammunition
has been found. The demining service (Dovo) arrived
on location and founds nearly 70 obusses, dated back to WW1,
between a metal support. Previously the employees
perceived an awkward smell and they evacuated the
zone. After Dovo took some samples around the field, it
seemed to be contaminated with Mustard gas (Yperite)
and fosgene.
Because of the discovery, aDeDe and Dovo
worked closely
together to safely excavate the rest of the
ammunition. aDeDe guaranteed the detection and
uncovering while Dovo guaranteed the removal and
destruction of toxic ordnance.

To avoid the danger of contamination, the
inhabitants in the nearest surroundings were evacuated
during the action and the street was sealed off by
the police.
The explosive experts wore gas masks, protection
suits, chemical resistant gloves and boots to
protect themselves against contamination. At the
same time a decontamination zone had been arranged
where the clothing and material could be completely disinfected, after leaving the work zone.

The good communication with the Mayer, the police
and the emergency services, allowed to react efficiently
in case of an emergency.
Eighty
obusses were removed safely.
